Last Night’s Look with Be Your Sass

Independent retailers must push the ‘Shop Small’ message as a hope for post-Covid recovery.

The conversation as we move on from the shit show that was the last 18 months is all about recovery. Recovery from the pandemic, recovery from the effects of Brexit and most importantly the recovery of the economy and the high street. Last year the big corps all got bigger as we all took to the internet. We shopped our way through lockdowns and came to depend on e-commerce and home delivery, Amazon, for one, reported its highest 1st & 2nd quarter revenues ever. However, if we are to restore and maintain our vibrant local communities people need to shift some of that spending back to their local shops. It doesn’t mean you can’t buy on Amazon, but instead of 100% of your money going there, spend some locally, that will directly impact on the local economy, create jobs and you just might see a local business owner do a happy dance.

There are already early signs of hope, whilst Amazon might still be the first stop for nearly 50% of online shoppers, consumer responses in small business surveys suggest that the tide might be turning as shoppers are looking for an alternative and the shift is most notable among younger consumers. More aware of the impact fast fashion and cheap goods have on the environment values-lead millennials are embracing vintage and sustainable goods and without compromising their style by mixing old and new.

One of my favourite local retailers, who glammed her way through lockdown with her own eclectic vintage style, is Josie – a curator of vintage clothes and founder of Be Your Sass

A firm believer of “Wearing what makes you happy, Josie is sprinkling a good dose of individuality and sustainable vintage glamour from her Cornwall based shop in St Columb Major and says …

... "Whatever the day. Whatever the occasion make every day dress up day"

Couldn't have said it better myself Josie
